Bharat Bandh on Feb 20, 21 to paralyse India for 2 days

New Delhi, Feb 18: A nation-wide bandh supported by all trade unions of the country is going to paralyse India for two consecutive days on Feb 20 and Feb 21.

All major cities such as Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and many others are expected to come to a complete standstill as autos, buses including others vehicles will not ply on roads on those two days.

Protesting against privatisation, outsourcing, violation of labour laws, price rise and several other burning issues of the country, trade unions of banking, insurance, public sector undertakings, transporters and unorganised sectors called for Bharat Bandh.

Over 100 million workers are expected to join the strike in country. Several protest marches will be held in different cities on Wednesday and Thursday, informed sources.

Some of the trade unions, who are participating in the strike, are - Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), All India United Trade Union Centre (AIUTUC), Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) and many others.

However, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urged all trade unions to call off their two-day-strike. The PM was quoted as saying, "I appeal to the Central Trade Unions to withdraw their call for a country wide General Strike on Feb 20 and 21, 2013. Such a strike would lead to avoidable loss to our economy and inconvenience to the public through disruption of services." "...I am confident that these discussions would result in a course of action that is acceptable both to the Trade Unions and the Government," he added.
