All India Strike 2013 Latest News:COUNTRYWIDE TWO DAYS GENERAL STRIKE ON 20-21 FEBRUARY 2013
Press Statement issued today in the Press Conference held at Press Club of India, New Delhi addressed by the following Central Trade Union leaders – B.N. Rai, General Secretary-BMS, Dr. Sanjeev Reddy, President-INTUC, Gurudas Dasgupta, General Secretary-AITUC, Harbhajan Singh, General Secretary-HMS, Tapan Sen, General Secretary-CITU, R.K. Shama, Secretary-AIUTUC, Swapan Mukherjee, General Secretary-AICCTU, Aboni Roy, Secretary-UTUC, Shikha Joshi, from SEWA. The other National Leaders present in the press meet included D.L. Sachdev and Amarjeet Kaur, Secretaries AITUC, R.A. Mittal Secretary HMS, Padmanabhan President CITU, Dimiri from AICCTU among other.
Preparations for two days All India General Strike on 20-21 February 2013 are in full swing. Call for this historic strike has jointly been given by the all recognized Central Trade Unions and Independent Federations of Workers and Employees as decided in the National Convention of Workers on 4th September 2012.
After conclusion of massive March to Parliament on 20th December, 2012, conventions in all states, major metropolitan cities and industrial areas, strike notices have been served by unions and federations of Road Transport, Port and Dock, Electricity, Petroleum, Coal, Steel, Defence Production, Telecommunications, Postal, hospitality sector and major Engineering, Electrical and automobile sectors, central and state govts. employees, building and construction, plantation and scheme workers like anganwadis ASHA, Sarvshiksha Abhiyan and other unorganized sector workers will remain on strike for these two days. Banking, Insurance and other financial sector workers will also remain on strike.
Sky rise inflation, disinvestment of profit making public sector undertakings, non-implementation of labour laws, increase in deployment of contract labour on jobs of regular nature, inadequate minimum wage, absence of social security for millions of workers and above all denial of basic human trade union rights, have compelled the workers to go on strike.
The Central Trade Unions criticized the government for its inaction and total indifference towards the miserable plight of the workers who keep the wheel of the economy moving. The last minute meeting called by the Union Labour Minister on 13th February resulted in further strengthening the resolve for strike as govt. could not come forward to resolve even anyone of the issues concerning Ministry of Labour.
The demands formulated jointly by the Central Trade Unions three years back relate to: 1) concrete measures to contain price rise, 2) concrete measures for employment generation, 3) strict enforcement of labour laws, 4) universal social security cover for organized and unorganized workers and creation of National Social Security Fund and 5) stoppage of disinvestment in Central and State PSUs / Undertakings, 6) No Contractorisation of work of permanent/perennial nature and payment of wages and benefits to the contract workers at the same rate as available to the regular workers of the industry/establishment, 7) Amendment of Minimum Wages Act to ensure universal coverage irrespective of the schedules and fixation of statutory minimum wage at not less than Rs 10,000/- linked with cost price index, 8) Remove all ceilings on payment and eligibility of Bonus, Provident Fund; Increase the quantum of gratuity, 9) Assured Pension for all, 10) Compulsory registration of trade unions within a period of 45 days and immediate ratification of the ILO Conventions Nos. 87 and 98.
Over 100 million workers will participate in the strike. The Central Trade Unions regret the inconvenience to be caused to the public and appeal for its support.
